Black Panther Assembles Impressive Cast

Exciting news for the the upcoming Black Panther film, which is going to be directed by Ryan Coogler (Creed) and starring Chadwick Boseman as the film’s namesake. Boseman was excellent in his debut as Black Panther in Civil War and now it’s being reported that Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o is set to join the cast.  While it’s not been officially announced by Marvel and her role is as yet unknown, it’s still exciting news.

As if this wasn’t enough, it’s also rumoured that Creed, Fan4stic and Chronicle star Michael B Jordan is also set to join as the film’s villain. Interestingly, Jordan would be the second actor to join the MCU after playing Johnny Storm/ Human Torch following in Chris Evans’ footsteps.

If true, signing up Hollywood A-listers is becoming somewhat of a trend for Marvel. Doctor Strange has a really impressive cast with Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton,Mads Mikkelsen and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Guardians of the Galaxy has signed up Kurt Russell. It’s also rumoured that Thor 3 has signed up Cate Blanchett. It’s an interesting change of direction from Marvel who, excluding Robert Downey Jr and Samuel L Jackson, have normally gone for newcomers for their lead roles.

Perhaps the reason behind this is that Kevin Feige, head of Marvel, was last year given pretty much free reign over the direction of the MCU. Previously, he reported to a committee under the control of Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter. Now, Perlmutter and Feige are rumoured to not be the best of chums and, as the rumours go, Marvel was at risk of losing Feige if Perlmutter stayed in charge. Perlmutter is also notoriously stingy with money and was even rumoured to be restricting the number of drinks given out to journalists at certain events. Can’t see him splashing out for some of these stars, then. Perhaps Feige, with his new found freedom, has been able to splash the cash a bit more and as a result he’s brining in some big names. Let’s hope they’re not just here for the money.

Black Panther is set for release 2018, and that can’t come soon enough.
